Rivers and mountains, walls and fences, buildings or contracts—people have used and continue to use markers of all kinds to define spaces. While some demarcations have an official function and are obvious, others require you to look closely, observe thoroughly and immerse yourself fully. In the first exhibition curated by Linnea Streit for the Stadtgalerie Brixen, Stefan Alber, Hannes Egger, Flo Kasearu, Letizia Romanini, Johanna Tinzl, Stefan Flunger pursue the borders in and around Europe. Some of the works deal with their material presence, following their course by path or by road. Yet, more abstract ideas of space and division, symbols of European institutions, issues of values and currency also come into play. The artists’ approaches range from conceptual or documentary to poetic or humorous.
At the beginning of June, the elections to the European Parliament will take place in the EU member states—time to reflect on the ideals we strive for and how they can be realised along the borders in and around the European Union

Flüsse, Gebirge, Mauern, Wände, Zäune, Gebäude, Verträge – ganz unterschiedliche Markierungen wurden und werden von Menschen verwendet oder aktiv gesetzt, um Räume zu definieren. Während manche Abgrenzungen offiziellen Charakter haben und offensichtlich sind, werden andere nur durch aufmerksames Suchen, Hinsehen und Hineinfühlen erkennbar. In der ersten von Linnea Streit für die Stadtgalerie Brixen kuratierten Ausstellung spüren Stefan Alber, Hannes Egger, Flo Kasearu, Letizia Romanini, Johanna Tinzl & Stefan Flunger den Grenzen in und um Europa nach. Einige Arbeiten gehen von ihrer materiellen Präsenz aus, erschließen sich ihre Verläufe laufend oder fahrend. Aber auch abstraktere Ideen von Raum und Unterteilung, Symbole der europäischen Institutionen, Fragen der Werte und der Währung kommen ins Spiel. Die Herangehensweisen der Künstler:innen reichen dabei von konzeptuell oder dokumentarisch bis hin zu poetisch oder humorvoll.
Anfang Juni finden in den Mitgliedsstaaten der EU die Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament statt – Zeit, darüber nachzudenken, nach welchen Idealen wir streben und wie wir diese an den Grenzen in und um die Europäische Union leben möchten.

Fiumi, montagne, mura, pareti, recinzioni, edifici, trattati: sono molti e molto diversi i mezzi e gli elementi, anche naturali, con cui l’umanità ha definito e definisce ancora oggi gli spazi. Mentre alcune demarcazioni hanno un carattere formale e sono evidenti, altre possono essere riconosciute solo attraverso una ricerca ed un’osservazione scrupolosa, oppure grazie alla sensibilità. Nella prima mostra curata da Linnea Streit per la Galleria Civica di Bressanone, Stefan Alber, Hannes Egger, Flo Kasearu, Letizia Romanini, Johanna Tinzl e Stefan Flunger esplorano i confini interni ed esterni all’Europa. Alcuni lavori si presentano nella loro fisicità e sono stati ispirati da viaggi a piedi o con mezzi di trasporto. In altri entrano in gioco concetti più astratti di spazio e divisione, simboli delle istituzioni europee, questioni di valore e valuta. Gli approcci degli artisti e delle artiste spaziano dal concettuale al documentaristico, dal poetico all’umoristico.
All’inizio di giugno, negli Stati membri dell’UE, si terranno le elezioni del Parlamento europeo: è il momento di riflettere a quali ideali vogliamo aspirare e come vogliamo viverli lungo i confini interni ed esterni all’Unione Europea.
