The exhibition route focuses on trees, woods and forests, their protective role, their development as they adapt to a constantly changing environment and their growing fragility, caused by direct human actions and the secondary effects of ongoing climate change.
From Storm Adrian – which tore down entire forests in northern Italy in 2018 – to the unpreceden- ted wildfires that have recently devastated the Arctic. From arson at the service of industrial agen- das to the deforestation of the Amazon Forest that is wiping out biodiversity and cultural habitats, aggravating the release of CO2 into the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.
The project casts a bridge back in history to the foundation of the Associazione Pro Montibus per la protezione delle piante e per favorire il rimboschimento (an association championing plant protec- tion and reforestation) established in Turin in 1898 and the first Festa degli Alberi (National Tree Planting Day) celebrated at the Palestra of the Club Alpino Italiano at the Monte dei Cappuccini in Turin on 18 September of the same year.
The exhibition emphasises the twofold value of the concept of care in the human/tree relationship at this particular moment in time and allocates space to the extraordinary persona of Ermenegildo Zegna, his “eco-mindset” and his impressive achievements in tree planting and the promotion and management of the mountain environment around Trivero (Biella) from the 1930s on. La mostra Tree Time mette al centro del percorso espositivo le recenti dinamiche di alterazione e di distruzione di alberi, boschi e foreste. Una riflessione sui concetti di cura degli alberi e di gestione della montanga, di salute e biosicurezza delle piante, ma anche su temi come piantumazione e assited migrations. Dalla recente Tempesta Vaia alle conseguenze del global warming sulla proliferazione di malattie e agenti patogeni; dal problema degli incendi all’enorme impatto che la deforestazione esercita sulla perdità di identità e di biodiversità.
La mostra apre a una serie di riflessioni sul ruolo del cambiamento climatico nella perdita di questi ecosistemi e sul loro ruolo positivo nel processo di mitigazione di tale cambiamento.
Il progetto dà spazio alla figura di Ermenegildo Zegna, al suo “pensiero verde” e alla sua imponente opera di piantumazione, valorizzazione e gestione dell’ambiente montano attorno a Trivero (Biella).
Tree Time è un racconto visivo che unisce le ricerche artistiche di venti artisti contemporanei con un nucleo di fotografie e di documenti storici che appartengono all’Area Documentazione del Museomontagna. Il progetto è supportato da una serie di contributi storico-scientifici di Matteo Garbellotto, Fitopatologo e Docente presso l’Università di Berkeley e sarà accompagnato da un public program di eventi.
