Hannes Egger and Thomas Sterna will give away a total of 12 one-week slots for exhibitions at KulturBahnhof Kassel during documenta fifteen.
From June to September 2022, the two artists have rented an exhibition space at KulturBahnhof Kassel, where they will draw lots for a total of 12 one-week presentation slots during documenta fifteen – leaving the decision up to chance rather than a panel of experts. Artists, curators and exhibition organisers can enter the prize draw by simply purchasing one or more raffle tickets, that way automatically taking part in all future draws. The Win-Win Lottery at KulturBahnhof Kassel will officially open its doors on Thursday 16 June from 18:00. On the occasion of this inauguration vernissage, the second round of lots will be drawn at 20:30.
During the preview and the subsequent opening weekend of documenta fifteen from 15 to 19 June 2022, the project space will be accessible daily from 10 in the morning to 18:00 in the evening. The first batch of winners will exhibit their work from 24 June.
The increasing re-courtification of post-modern society does not stop at “art” and its forms of presentation, especially since an ever-growing new establishment – the super-rich and celebrities from the worlds of politics and arts – focuses primarily on market-driven artistic excellence as a source of image transfer, status cultivation or speculative investment. As a consequence, “Winner Takes All” effects are becoming ever more pervasive – while stifling older forms of artistic autonomy that are still in keeping with the tradition of modernism. Or, as Pierre Bourdieu put it, those who don’t have an (affluent) audience don’t have any talent. This is a radical reversal of the beliefs held by Marcel Duchamp, who still dared to voice his dissent with his influential contemporaries of the mid-20th century, placing his trust in a future audience.
The drawing of lots has long been a pivotal part of democratic decision-making: In Ancient Greece, for instance, sortition was used to allocate political offices in Athens, and the practice of casting lots is mentioned several times in the Old Testament. Now, it is undergoing a revival that permeates the current discussions around new forms of democratic participation. The Win-Win Lottery project will see the practice trialled as a selection procedure capable of provoking a much-needed debate on conventional evaluation standards and ranking systems.

Hannes Egger und Thomas Sterna verlosen mit der Win-Win Lottery 12 Ausstellungen im KulturBahnhof von Kassel während der documenta fifteen.
Vom Juni bis September 2022 haben die beiden Künstler im KulturBahnhof Kassel einen Projektraum angemietet, wo sie anderen Künstler*innen die Chance geben je für eine Woche auszustellen. An die Stelle eines Experten*innen – Gremiums tritt der Zufall. Künstler*innen, Kurator*innen und Ausstellungsmacher*innen können sich unkompliziert über den Kauf von einem oder mehreren Losen auf der Webseite www.winwinlottery.org für den Ausstellungsraum bewerben und nehmen an allen zukünftigen Losungen teil.
Die Eröffnung der Win-Win Lottery im Kulturbahnhof in Kassel findet am Donnerstag, den 16. Juni um 18 Uhr statt. Im Rahmen dieser Vernissage wird um 20.30 Uhr die zweite Losziehung vorgenommen. Geöffnet ist der Projektraum während der Preview und dem anschließenden Eröffnungswochenende der documenta fifteen (15. bis 19.06.22) täglich von 10 bis 18 Uhr. Ab dem 24. Juni stellen die ersten Gewinner*innen aus.
Die zunehmende Rehöfisierung der postmodernen Gesellschaft bleibt der “Kunst” und ihren Präsentationsformen nicht äußerlich, denn das stetig wachsende, neue Establishment, bestehend aus Superreichen, und politischen oder künstlerischen Celebrities, fokussiert primär auf vom Markt geförderte, künstlerische Exzellenz als Quelle für Imagetransfers, Statuspflege oder Spekulationsinvestition. „Winner Takes All“-Effekte breiten sich folgerichtig immer weiter aus und ersticken die alten, noch der Tradition der Moderne verpflichteten Formen künstlerischer Autonomie. Wer kein (zahlungskräftiges) Publikum hat, hat auch kein Talent, heißt es bei Pierre Bourdieu. Das ist die radikale Umkehrung der Haltung von Marcel Duchamp, der noch Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts im Vertrauen auf ein künftiges Publikum den Dissenz mit den einflussreichen Zeitgenoss*innen wagte.
Das Losverfahren als bereits in der Antike erprobtes Mittel demokratischer Auswahl, erwähnt sei z.B. die Verlosung politischer Ämter in Athen oder der Losentscheid im Alten Testament, erfährt in der Diskussion neuer Formen demokratischer Partizipation aktuell eine Wiederbelebung. Es wird im Win-Win Lottery Projekt als Auswahlverfahren erprobt und provoziert damit die gewünschte Diskussion von herkömmlichen Bewertungsstandards und Rankingmodellen.
